Anyway, I been doing some research yesterday about yeasts.  I discovered that there are many different types of yeasts that exists.  The type you use in cooking is Saccharomyces cerevisiae (how do you pronounce that?), it doesn’t survive in human bodies.  It reproduces by budding, a word for splitting itself into two identical cells.  It is in the Fungi kingdom.

According to the information I found on some website, when yeast, mold, or fungus is allowed to grow, it will produce anti-bacterial chemicals that kills bacterias that tries to take the food it is eating.  If someone is going to take your food, would you defend it?  Of course you will, and a type of the chemicals are ethyl acetate.  Which means that vinegar, contains a large quantity of ethyl acetate, will promote yeast growth.

The only question I have now is how long can the yeast cell survive in a normal life cycle?

Burning my right hand, lol

Ok, this is definitely stupid to do, just don’t try this yourself unless you like lighting your hand on fire.  There are more cool tricks to do than just burning your hand like holding a fireball in your hand.  Anyway, it doesn’t feel as bad as I thought it would be.  Its like holding on to a slice of pizza that just came out of the oven, but it if stays on too long (like a few seconds), it burns.  Some hairs on my right hand was burnt, I can smell it lol.~

I’m thinking about imitating the money burning trick by myself, but of course, I’m broke.  So I won’t be using real money, instead I would just use a piece of paper.  Anyway, I made my purchase me a bottle of 70% Isopropyl Alcohol, with a chemical formula of C3H8O.  Although I have a 99% bottle at home, I could’ve just mix the water in with the alcohol itself, but I’m just too lazy, let’s hope that 70% doesn’t burn too hot that will set the paper on fire, or I’ll have to mix in water myself (which completely undermine the purpose of getting a 70% Isopropyl Alcohol).

Anyway, since my mom took my glass container to germinate some seeds, I would have to wait till tomorrow to do this experiment.

Heres what you’ll need:

95-99% Isopropyl Alcohol, I’ll post a follow up post to this one about the 70%

Water

Salt, for a visible yellow flame

And some kind of ignition source, lighter, torch, bond fire, flame thrower, you get the idea

For the water part, mix the water with the alcohol with a 50:50 ratio (add more alcohol if the mixture won’t ignite), maybe mix the water with the salt first (a few shake should be enough).  Then dip the dollar bill in it, but first test it with a piece of paper first, since defacing US Currency is illegal.  Then impress your friends, if they don’t know about it…….

Since the water has a very high specific heat, which insulates the paper form the heat of the burning alcohol and it also prevents you from cooking during a hot day.  I’ll actually put my hand into the flame and see how hot it is, if I can bear it, you’ll see my hand on fire in the video in the follow up post.

Yep, you guessed it, I did get the inspiration from the Axe Deodorant Flame Thrower.  But the thing is, the Lysol make a more sexy flame than the Axe.  Although the Axe flame have more energy, but the Lysol flame gave off more light which lit up my whole garage.  By the way, I should tell you that Lysol contains 58% ethanol, which is also found in normal alcoholic beverages, but don’t spray it in your mouth thinking you can get drunk off of it, you probably die before you get drunk.  Since its 58% ethanol, it means that you can spray it on the door handle and ignite the handle on fire, or spraying it on your hand so that you have a flaming hand and show it off to your friends (I personally wouldn’t do the flaming hand trick, there are better ways of doing it, there are plenty of videos on how to make a fire ball that won’t burn your hand on YouTube).

The match went out before the corn starch part was on fire, I figure its because I had the match held straight up, if I had it sideways, I believe I don’t have to reignite the match.

Here is a cheesy one I did indoor, stupidity.

Why?  Because it uses SD Alcohol 40-B, isobutane and propane as propellants for the fragrance.

Do try this at home(not inside) at night, it looks awesome, better with a full can of AXE, the one I used is like 1/3 full.

The result is not as I’ve expected, I think its because I dropped it before I ignite it.

But have you noticed? The match head burnt longer than the normal ones and the flame increased in size when it hits the place that has a pocket of corn starch that has not shatter when I dropped it.

I wonder how it would be like if I mix the match head and the corn starch together and ignite it. Must be fun.

Sorry for not posting anything for a long time, and now I have problem knowing what to write.

Anyway, I’ve been looking into some organic compounds lately and discovered that cornstarch is flammable, since its a cellulose which have an autoignition temperature at 410 ‘C.  Yesterday I’ve been trying to ignite the corn starch powder on fire in my sink, and yes you guessed it, its not successful.  Then I realized I need to expose it to oxygen since only the top part are which is burnt after I try lighting it on fire.  The only way of not blowing it with your mouth into the air and creating a dust storm is to add some oxidizer, like KNO3,  into the corn starch.

The problem is, I don’t have any KNO3 or NH4NO3 lying around in my house.  So I look up where to get them on the internet and suddenly I saw the word match, and I realized that the head of the match can be used as an oxidizer, because it contains KClO3 and some other combustible chemicals like sulfur.

At first I was going to crush the match heads with the corn starch to create a combustible mixture, but then I found out that I only have so few matches so now I change the mixture idea into this improvised matchstick.

Here is what I did:

for the matchstick, I first mix some corn starch in some hot water and stir it with a Q-tip, then I “painted” a match with the Q-tip leaving the tip untouched which will let me ignite the match with ease later on.  After I applied the corn starch water mixture on the matchstick, I sprinkled some corn starch on it to dry it quicker.

Prediction:

since I don’t want to blow the corn starch into a cloud, I wouldn’t be getting a fire ball, but I do expect a more dramatic ignition when I light the match.

After the suppose dramatic ignition, I’ll post a video of me igniting my Improvised Match.
