Baking Soda and Acid in a Bottle

leave a comment »

Do you remember mixing baking soda and vinegar in science class when you were in elementary or even middle school? Well, I’m sure you will. It’s pretty much the best experiment you ever did in school, unless you can play with fire or some other sorts of exploding crap. Well anyway, have you ever thought of taking the experiment into the next step? Well if you do, this could be the article for you.

Materials:

Safety goggles

34 grams or more (if you can’t be accurate in your measuring) of baking soda

450ml lemon juice (or vinegar if you like, but lemon juice works better, since citric acid is stronger than acetic acid)

a .5 L water bottle

Procedure:

1. Put the lemon juice into the bottle

2. Deliver the baking soda into the bottle, but you should make sure it doesn’t have any crumb in it

3. Quickly put the cap back on, make sure it is tight

4. According to my calculation, it will produce 9 L of carbon dioxide at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, just imagine how much more it will make in a hot summer day

5. Throw it (not at other people) at somewhere where it is safe, or set it down and RUN LIKE HELL

Conclusion:

H3C6H5O7 + 3 NaHCO3  ->  3 H2O + 3 CO2 + Na3C6H5O7

Citric Acid + Sodium Bicarbonate -> Water + Carbon Dioxide + Sodium Citrate

Lemon Juice + Baking Soda -> Water + Carbon Dioxide + Sodium Citrate

You can sum up this experiment using this equation: Lemon  Juice + Baking Soda + Water Bottle = Boom + Fun + Grounded

If you want to check my math:

450. ml LJ x (.30 mole H3C6H5O7 / 1000 ml LJ) x (3 mole CO2 / 1 mole H6C2H5O7) x (22.4 L CO2 / 1mole CO2) x (1000 ml CO2 / 1 L CO2) = 9072 ml CO2

And yes I know, my significant figures are not right.

If I did anything wrong, or something didn’t go right, please feel free to leave a comment.

Some other ideas:

Use less lemon juice and baking soda, put it into a bottle and shake well (don’t ever point the cap towards you when you shake it), and put it on the ground and camouflage it. There, you made a mine.

If you can control the thing well, you can throw it into a room (I recommend you not to), and it should work as a stun grenade.

Thanks
